In one of the scariest incidents happened to soccer fraternity, one former Brazilian goalie is found guilty of killing his girlfriend, and more importantly, brutally dismembering her body which was never found to investigating officers. He is sent to jail for a term exceeding 22 years by a city court headed by seven judges, including five women and two men. Earlier, it was expected that even a longer sentence would be given to him, but according to judges, his sentence is reduced coz of his confession of doing such a crime, moreover, he can also get more letup during sentence depending upon his behavior in first four to five years in jail. In Brazil, anyone can only be sent behind the bars for a maximum period of thirty years, and since Bruno was already in jail for a forced abortion of her girlfriend, his sentence has been decided accordingly. Bruno, the 28 year old Flamengo goalie, was once the favorite to be selected in the Brazil’s national squad but due to some reasons he was not taken into the national team, however, he made his club win Brazilian league back in 2009. Today, when this news flashed in the media, it became hot news across Brazil which led his career almost finished.
During the trail, there were many more accused who helped him doing this crime; some of them were, his wife along with his friends and a girlfriend, but judge acquitted his wife citing she acted under pressure while his other friends and girlfriend were also held responsible for this heinous crime. Until now, Bruno has been denying of knowing anything about his girlfriend’s killing and it was only last week he accepted of having knowledge about her killing, though he didn’t accept any involvement in her killing. Moreover, he also blamed a friend of him for this murder which was proved wrong by prosecuting lawyer. Defense lawyer, on the other side, said post sentence that they had expected such ruling and they will file an appeal against it. Victim’s mother also issued her statement after the judgment where she said, she had expected more and judges made it easy on him offering him just 22-year imprisonment.
Judge Marixa Fabiane Lopes Rodrigues read the sentence which mentioned, “These crimes received a lot of attention not only because one of the defendants was a famous football player, but also because of the plot that they involved, and because of the mystery of where the victim’s remains were hidden.”
