Former England captain finally won a title for PSG and became the only English player to win four international league titles for different teams. Yesterday, PSG won the Ligue 1 title for the first time in last 19 years where Beckham entered into the field as a substitute and guided the road to this magnificent win. The close 1-0 win at the final made him a lucky player for his club as well who now wants him to continue a longer stay with them – if not as a player in another role probably. Though, as per some media reports, he has already signed a one year extension to his earlier signed six months short spell at PSG, and according to rumors, he can be offered another addition at even more lucrative terms if he decides to stay here. After the victory, when he was asked about his future plans or if he would like to play here for a longer period, he avoided answering a definite reply and said, “I am going to enjoy tonight and that’s what matters.”
This is the second big title for Beckham in less than last six months; first one was Major League Soccer Cup Final back in December. Though, he did play in every match for PSG this season, but he did what he was brought in for and grabbed extensive media coverage right from the moment he signed the short deal; perhaps media used to gather on his training sessions, and in front of his hotel room, which eventually helped PSG gained widespread media attention as well. About the plans to keep him in another role, club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi said, “If he decided not to continue his playing career, I hope he’ll stay in another role. To have him among us, on the pitch or off it, is very important. It’s up to him. We’ll see what David wants to do. We’d like him to continue with us. He’s a man of great quality.”
At the moment, officially, PSG has won the title, but due to post match violence and claimed shoulder-barging to referee by sporting director Leonardo; there could be a possible points’ deduction, hence nothing has been formally declared by the authorities. Anyways, Beckham has entered his name into the history by becoming the only English player to win a title for four different countries. Moreover, this is perhaps the first major title win for PSG after they were taken over by a subsidiary of oil and gas rich nation, Qatar, back in 2011.
