For many, soccer is a game being played between two teams who compete on ground, while for others; it is also a mind game where masters of the game try to influence their opponents with their carefully chosen war of the words. Manchester United and Manchester City are two top contenders of coming EPL season but there is one more area where they always seem to be fighting with each other, i.e., summer buying. This summer, United could not be successful in taking some of its interested players; in fact, they could only fetch Uruguayan youngster Guillermo Varela this summer while missing notables like, Cesc Fabregas and Thiago Alcantara. On the other side, City has outspent them by far by adding Fernandinho, Jesus Navas, Alvaro Negredo, and Stevan Jovetic to their army, and if we look at the top spending this summer, City is very close to complete its 100 million mark while Chelsea is closely following it. Chelsea’s former Everton manager Jose Mourinho has always been known for taking exaggerated steps by spending mega millions to hire his aspiring players. Fulham club has bought three players to Stamford Bridge this summer, i.e., Andre Schurrle, Marco van Ginkel, and Mark Schwarzer.
Ryan Giggs, the player coach of defending league champions, now says they don’t need to throw extravagant money to retain their title, perhaps, for him, they are more than equipped to triumph league trophy again. Giggs has been a legendry player for The Reds having contributed in as many as 13 league titles. He said, “Obviously Mourinho has come into Chelsea, and City are spending quite a bit of money, but it is not something we are worried about. We are the champions. We know it’s not easy to defend the trophy, but we have experienced it before and we will try to do it again this season. The quality is in the squad. We showed that last year — now we have to show it again.
“I think it has been a slow transfer window. I said City had done their business early on but, other than that, there has not been a lot of movement. It could be a hectic last two weeks. We will just have to wait and see. If we sign someone, great. If not, we will just get on with it. We are quite happy with the players in our dressing room. We won the league with those players, and we are looking forward to the start of the season.”
