It has always been a dream for a newcomer to start his professional career in a league like championship league and if he could also manage to score his first goal in it, it is like dream comes true for him and this is what seems to be happening with Borussia Dortmund’s 21-year-old midfielder Julian Weigl who scored his first professional goal for Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Tuesday.
It was actually a long-range shot that happened two minutes before half-time and doubled Dortmund‘s lead at Sporting Lisbon which proved to be decisive by the end. Since, it was the much awaited debut goal for the player, it means a lot for him hence he is taking it as the life changer for him and he still could not realize how it could happen! Playing his second championship league season and scoring the first goal is something that everyone would like to remember for his hard work and dedication that could make his career brighter than earlier. Talking about the game and his first European goal, he said after the game, “I am not really sure what I did for the goal. I am ecstatic that I finally found the back of the net. The manager keeps saying we have got to take our chances, and I managed that tonight.
“Sporting showed fight though in attempting to get themselves back into the game. But we gave our all, and we are happy that we made it over the line to win the game 2-1.”
Likewise, manager also added few good words about his form in the current season and why other teenagers – trio of Ousmane Dembele, Felix Passlack, and Christian Pulisic – should follow him and said, “Today a young and inexperienced team played with such self-confidence during the first half. Sporting took big risks after our two goals. It is normal to come under pressure. After scoring to make it 1-2, their fans got louder. My players did not want to give up and I credit them for this important victory.”
Adding about the strategy his side followed in the game Thomas Tuchel furthered, “We still managed to create a few chances in the first half, but we were not has aggressive as we should have been and we let our opponents score twice. In the second half we were stronger, we played more aggressively and, with a little bit of luck, we could have got at least a draw. In the Champions League details are what matter and that was what made the difference today. I believe that we are still in contention for a place in the next stage and I believe we can get a win in Germany.”
