Colombia’s former goalie Miguel Calero is confirmed dead after having a stroke last month; he was since in the hospital. The 41-year old star ex-goalkeeper underwent with a brain surgery to relieve from stroke’s effect, but despite repeated attempts to save him, he was declared brain dead by the doctors, however, according to his family’s wish, he continued being on a life support system by the time all his family members get together in Mexico. His club Pachuca, whom he was training these days, informed the world about his death via Facebook. The statement reads as, “Grupo Pachuca deeply regret reporting here that on the day December 4 2012, the biggest symbol of Tuzos, Miguel Angel Calero Rodriguez, has passed away. Miguel Calero was a football player who left his mark on a great era in the history of Club Pachuca. We would like to thank everyone for showing love, support and solidarity towards him and his family.” As soon his death was officially confirmed by the hospital, process of his cremation started and he got cremated on Tuesday at 6:30pm local time.
Miguel Calero has been a legendry goalie throughout his long run career. Popularly known as “El Condor,’’ he was popular for his long spread arms. Despite saving hundreds of goals; he also fired four goals making him top goal scorer goalie of all time. Moreover, he also played for his native Colombia in as many as 50 international games along with making 365 league appearances. He got retired from professional football in October 2011. His last club was Pachuca whom he used to coach. With an impressive long running career, he was one of the best goalkeepers Columbia ever had along with Rene Higuita and Julian Viafara.
Actually, he had the potential to play many more years, but his left arm’s venous thrombosis shortened his career, and he has to retire from international soccer. The oxygen rich blood was not able to carry to his brain, coz of his thrombosis; doctors tried their hard to improve his blood carrying veins but could not save him. His long running career started in 1995 against Nigeria has now ended completely. The starlet also won four league titles along with the regional Copa Sudamericana with Pachuca. Anyways, Colombian president Juan Manual also gave his condolences to him via twitter. He tweeted, “It hurts every Colombian what happened to Miguel Calero. Football is in mourning.”
