It was the gloomiest moment of his life when young West Ham defender Dan Potts clash with Bacary Sagna and fell awkwardly on the ground in West Ham’s 5-1 defeat to Arsenal, on Wednesday. Eighteen years old became instantly unconscious and given treatment for a good ten minutes when he woke up and then taken off the field on a stretcher. Looking at the way he stuck his head with another player, everyone had an impression that player could have incurred a concussion which needs an immediate treatment in the hospital. Potts junior is the son of former West Ham defender Steve Potts, the player who has played more than 400 matches for the club during his 17 years spell with them. Besides playing for senior West Ham team, Dan has also served a loan spell for a League One club at Colchester. The product of West Ham’s youth training academy, Dan Potts has just begun his senior debut and right in the beginning of his career his head injury could be a nightmare for him if it leaves any untreated invisible injury inside his brain.
Speaking about the incident, Hammers manager Sam Allardyce said, “The clash of heads initially knocked him out and he hit the floor as a dead weight and I think that is what the problem was.
“He hadn’t spoken when he came off the field. He spoke about some things that they asked him on the pitch but they were not the correct answers so that is how we knew he was concussed. He was communicating but was obviously confused.
“He is in observation tonight but you don’t know with these things, only X-rays will tell if anything else is wrong, but hopefully it is just concussion.
“We will do everything in our power to make sure he has a quick recovery.”
Potts came into the pitch as a substitute in 62nd minute and could only stay there for next ten minutes before he met Bacary Sagna in an afford to secure the ball. Another midfielder Jack Collison, who just returned after an injury, also said that Potts injury is a big blow for the club; perhaps he recalled his brilliant performances in the last few weeks, he added, “He’s been magnificent for us these past few weeks. To get a chance tonight at a place like this is what he’s worked so hard for. We wish him a speedy recovery. I think there was a clash, these things happen. You’ve got to say well done to the medical team, they got in there and he’s in the best hands.”
