Abusive Tweets, Mark Halsey Complaints to Police

Mark Halsey

How Premier league’s matches leave their impact on fans’ mind was shown on Sunday after Liverpool and Manchester United match where Manchester United defeated Liverpool by a decisive last minute goal through a penalty rewarded by referee Mark Halsey to Robin van Persie. This penalty changed the game in Manchester United’s favor and Liverpool lost another match only to bring it down to eighteenth spot on leaderboard. Manchester United, with this win, secured its second place on the ranking table. Nonetheless, the match is more known for the fans retaliation to referee’s penalty decision which caused Liverpool a match. Referee Mark Halsey, who has long been fighting with his cancer, got some abusive tweets by the apparent fans of Liverpool; these tweets were targeted towards his personal health issues which disturbed him the most. He filed an official complaint with police and tweeter also took action immediately by removing those abusive tweets and banning one of two said accounts where tweets were sent from.

Two of the tweeter users with their ids: @johnwareing1 and @lfcjohn259 utterly blamed referee for the penalty so they retaliated their aggression via their abusive tweets. What they tweeted is again an immoral thing for anybody, coz they confronted Halsey’s most sensitive area. One of them (@johnwareing1) tweeted, “I hope Mark Halsey gets cancer again and dies,” and another (@lfcjohn259) tweeted, “Mark Halsey should’ve died of cancer.” Both these tweets were deleted by the tweeter immediately but Halsey felt so upset that he is not even able to concentrate on his next match between Southampton and Sheffield scheduled on Wednesday. For now, police is finding the location of both these users and trying to come out with all possible legal actions against them.

During the match, Halsey took two controversial decisions and both of them were against Liverpool, hence its fans become so aggressive towards Halsey. Later, Alan Leighton, national secretary of Prospect, issued his statement through Press Association Sport where he said, “Prospect wholeheartedly condemns the unacceptable abuse aimed at Mark Halsey on Twitter. The comments made by a very small minority will be seen as beneath contempt by all decent people.” Anyways, next Premium League’s match is going to start very soon and we hope nothing like this to be repeated again on or off the field. Meantime, Police will find out the users and take suitable action.
