Sounders forward and US soccer’s national teammate Alex Morgan has been named as the U.S athlete of the year. This award is most popular in US sports fraternity, and since it is being given to a young n shining star of soccer, US national soccer team is also expected to capitalize it on field as well. The 23 year old starlet outcast other contestants in terms of voting that was segregated equally among fans via Facebook, top officials of US soccer federation, and national media. In fact, her performance this year made him win this award where she leaded from the front and scored as many as 28 goals along with assisting in 19 others. Among all the goals she fired, her most important goal came in the semifinals of London Olympics where she led US victory over Canada by 4-3. Her male counterpart, i.e., U.S. Soccer’s male athlete, has already been honored last month. Morgan is also admired by everyone for his fitness, coz she was playing for his club continuously; perhaps she took a rest from his club and played in the Olympic and proved why she is a reigning queen of U.S soccer. In turn, US soccer fans returned him the favor and crowned her with a prestigious award.
She jubilantly said after winning the award, “I think that confidence is a big part, but the one thing that really sticks out is Abby Wambach. She’s been my inspiration. She’s been my partner up top and has helped me grow into my role comfortably. I want to keep improving and continue to make an impact on this team, I want to continue to put the team first, help the team grow and obviously the World Cup in 2015 is on our minds every day.”
Notably, she is also in the league for FIFA female soccer player of the year award along with Wambach, and both of them have a combined record of 50 plus international goals this year. The winner of FIFA’s Ballon d’Or shortlisted players will be announced on Jan. 7, 2013. Anyways, at the moment; she seems to be enjoying her first soccer player of the year award, and rightly so, she also became the third woman player in US soccer history to score maximum number of goals in a single calendar year. Moreover, she still has to play three more matches! God knows if she lands into the top two all-time highest scorers’ shoes as well.
