Andriy Shevchenko

If rumors are to be believed, ex AC Milan’s man of golden feet could become the national coach of Ukraine’s soccer team. Andriy Shevchenko is 36 years old former soccer player of Italian native who has played for many clubs in his career, including AC Milan, Chelsea, and Ukraine’s soccer club Dynamo Kiev. He departed from international soccer few months back when Ukraine excited from EURO 2012 which he captained and co-hosted by Ukraine. Earlier, reports were that he would join politics and perhaps, he tried his fortune in politics, but could not make any significant success, coz he lost his only fought election. His striking rate was among the bests in Ukraine with as many as 48 goals in 111 matches, which is very impressive considering the conditions he played in. About his probable entry to Ukraine’s national squad as coach, the fact is, Andriy Konkov, president of Ukraine’s Football Federation, has himself offered him this job, but as per the reports, he has not accepted or denied the offer yet. Looking at the deal’s offer, he is most likely to sign the contract, though he has not committed anything so far.

His eighteen-year dominance in national / international soccer won him many titles, including 2002-03 Champions League trophy while playing for AC Milan, many domestic titles for Dynamo Kiev, and Chelsea. His highest achievement was World Cup 2006 where he captained Ukraine and took it to quarterfinals. If everything proceeds as supposed, he will replace Oleh Blokhin who has now moved to coach Dynamo Kyiv. Despite the fact that he lacks the coaching experience, Konkov entrusts him for his abilities and understanding of the game. After all, he has won as many as three Spanish titles and two Champions League trophies! Further, backing his decision to appoint him as Ukraine’s National coach, Konkov said, “Remember – Pep Guardiola achieved incredible results in a few years. I’m sure Shevchenko also be able to conquer great football countries as head coach of this country. He has enough experience and character. The federation, in turn, will ensure to give him all the help he needs with the national team.”

At the moment, Ukraine is being placed at second bottom place in group H of world cup qualifying group; moreover, it is in the same group where England is, so Shevchenko’s experience of playing with English clubs can help Ukraine to secure a chance to enter world cup 2014.
