2 - 3 Galatasaray defeated Schalke by 3-2 on Tuesday night and won the last 16 two legs with 4-3 margin in aggregate. It was the first time in last 12 years when Galatasaray finds a place in the quarterfinal line up. First leg of the last 16 was leveled between two teams by 2-2; hence winner of Tuesday match has to be the quarterfinalist. Game was rather a nail biting for both teams where each of them tried hard to take the decisive lead, but ultimately, it was the day of Galatasaray that gave them their deserving birth into the last eight. FIFA ban another executive member for ninety days
In an attempt to clean FIFA’s executive committee, President Sepp Blatter banned another member Vernon Manilal Fernando of Sri Lanka for participating in any football activity for ninety days on the recommendations of Michael Garcia, the chairman of the investigatory chamber of the ethics committee, who found Vernon indulged in misuse of Asian Football Confederation (AFC) funds. Another executive member who was banned recently was AFC president Mohamed Bin Hammam, who also stood against Blatter for president for FIFA post, for his involvement in 2011 bribery scandal. Actually, he could not stand against Blatter coz bribery allegations have been leveled upon him by then. Apart from his ban, which was later nulled by Court of Arbitration for Sport, AFC president also continued misuse of his post at AFC; hence he had to resign from international duties for life. Brad Friedel asked to break his retirement amid Tim Howard’s injury
US national soccer team’s first goalkeeper Tim Howard has broken his two back bones recently; hence it is very much unlikely that he can come back very soon on the field. Further, his club Everton has also signaled his injury’s gravity by outing him for several weeks and informed about it via its official website. Everton manager David Moyes announced there that the American player would miss a long period of time, though, he did not mention the timeframe he may take to come back coz, for him, he is a goalkeeper and needs to jump frequently; hence his comeback is only possible if he gets fully fit. Chelsea show its strength in FA cup quarterfinal, force a replay
Chelsea recent form has been a kind of flip-flop where they won some matches while lost others. FA cup quarterfinal was the match they had always been looking to win, but it was never easy coz they were clashing with none other than Manchester United. The match began with a good note for United where they managed to secure a comprehensive lead right in the beginning of the game and everyone then thought it is all over for Chelsea at FA cup, but surprisingly, they fought back and leveled the initial lead in the last moments of the game forcing a replay of the quarterfinal. Liverpool 3-2 victory over Tottenham halts its unbeaten run
3 - 2 The EPL leaderboard is getting more and more interesting as the days are progressing. Just few weeks ago, it was unthinkable that Tottenham can be on the third place while Chelsea closely following it. Tottenham showed a magnificent gameplay in its last twelve matches and remained unbeaten for a dozen of EPL games, but ultimately, its unbeaten run is halted by Liverpool who is also surging its position in the leaderboard. Liverpool defeated Tottenham by 3-2 on Sunday making it to sit at the sixth place in the tally. Likewise, Tottenham has loosened its grip over third place which now became more vulnerable looking at its narrow lead from Chelsea who is also in good form after a FA’s quarterfinal draw against United.
