Barcelona FC is among the few teams in the world who are capable of breaking any record, and this is exactly what happened on Tuesday night, when Camp Nou club over turned the 2-0 deficit of the last 16 first leg away matches and won by 4-2 in aggregate; perhaps it is the first time where any team has chased, perhaps overcome, a 2-0 lead of the first leg without using benefit of an away goal. Before match, it was on everyone’s lips whether Barca can make the history and do the magic which is not done by any other team before. Barcelona thrashed AC Milan by 4-0 and entered into Champions league quarterfinal in style. Messi gave them a lead in initial moments which helped them boost their confidence level. Messi scored two goals while David Villa and Jordi Alba also found the net. Sportsbooks have also gave favorable odds in Milan’s favor before start of the game, but when Messi fired a goal within five minutes of the game, everything started changing gradually in Barca’s favor. It is the sixth straight season Barca has entered into the last eight, and if they could win it, it would be their fourth Champions League title in last eight years.
There were some changes made by assistant coach Jordi Roura who was into Tito Vilanova’s shoes after head coach had to go to the US for his throat cancer treatment. He took Villa in place of Cesc Fabregas; his inclusion made Andres Iniesta to play on the midfield area along with Xavi Hernandez while Javier Mascherano switched Carles Puyol in the defensive area. Likewise, Milan also made some changes into its final squad by including Mathieu Flamini and M’Baye Niang in place of injured Giampaolo Pazzini. Anyways, Milan’s 4-0 loss is their biggest in Champions league while Barca remained undefeated in last 20 league home games, which also shows the level of their strength.
Barca’s magical feat was witnessed by more than 96000 spectators who enjoyed every moment of it. It was more than a festival for home fans who were celebrated their home team’s early lead which they carried until the end. In-between, it was more desperate situation for Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri when Villa scored the third goal of the match which gave Barca an aggregate lead in both legs of last 16. It was also a memorable win for Tito Vilanova who is in the US right now and would surely be pleased to see his team is performing as he always wanted it to be.
