No manager would like to accept that his club is not as big as any other side has been in recent years and Liverpool, who is struggling to have a place among the top four in the English premier league, is one such side who has always been subjected to a comparison with none other than Manchester City. Since, these two sides have recently been more active than most of the other English sides, debates often take place why Liverpool players find City the better place to join. But, like any loyal manager, Brendan Rodgers has refused to accept his side is anyway less than City who has won two of the last three English titles. He specifically talks about the Raheem Sterling who recently reported to have been interested in a move out of Anfield after club rejected his reported asking salary of £100,000-per-week and 20-year-old Jamaican forward has since been in contact with Manuel Pellegrini who could lure him to make a shift in upcoming summer transfer window. When Rodgers was asked why his players are finding City a better place than Anfield, he did not answer clearly, however, only said, “If you say that Manchester City is a bigger club than Liverpool, you’re wrong.”
Moreover, he also denied of having any plan to release Sterling before summer 2017 when his contract would officially expire. Adding about Man City, he said, “At this moment in time Manchester City are on a great project. They’re a wonderful club, I’ve seen it for myself a few years ago when I spoke with them. I’ve got big respect for what they’re doing there. They’re trying to build it the right way, but at this moment in time you can’t compare them to us.
“You’ve got Liverpool and Manchester United as the two biggest clubs in this country — the rest of them are fighting to be there over the next 20 years.”
Talking about his upcoming games and what the role of his captain Steven Gerrard would be, he said, “There will be no emotion, no. I’m a bit heartless like that! Everyone respects that I always want to do what is best for the team, the collective. Status and star quality has never bothered me. Steven wants to do it for the team and we all think it would be fitting for him to finish like that. But the focus is on the collective.”
