It was a nail biting match which changed its path when Paolo Guerrero’s header in 69th-minute led South American champions Corinthians by 1-0 over Chelsea. This is their second international title; their first one was FIFA Club World Championship back in 2000. Rafael Benitez, the interim manager of Chelsea could not win his first trophy for the Blue Lions despite making three changes to the semifinal team which crushed Mexican side Monterrey by 3-1 in the semis, while Corinthians made only one change to their semifinal team by bringing Jorge Henrique in for Douglas. The final was a jam packed soccer spectacular attended by more than 68000 fans cheering each of the kicks made by either of the side. This match is also among first few to use goal line technology, which got its role right in the tenth minute when Cahill’s prodded shot was halted on the line by Corinthians goalkeeper Cassio.
The whole match was a full on entertainment package right from the word go, yet second half was more lively than first one. Despite that Corinthians made it difficult for Benitez side to take any initiative; however, Chelsea’s Gary Cahill afford from the corner was fumbled by Corinthians goalkeeper Cassio otherwise first session was a tough phase to score for either side. With this win, Corinthian becomes the second team to win this title twice along with Barcelona. Overall, the final was ruled by Corinthians goalkeeper Cassio who saved many failed attempts by Blues. Even Rafa Benitez praised him after the match, he said, “You could see today from the first minute it was going to be tough, they were very physical and organized. We had many chances but their `keeper was man of the match.”
Chelsea was playing in its third world final; earlier it has played in 2005 where it was defeated by Liverpool in the final, and second time, two years ago, when it was the title winner. Its third attempt to win the trophy for the second time is shattered by Corinthians in last moments. Corinthians coach Tite said after his victory, “This victory is the result of teamwork, each player played his own role. There were a lot of elements to this victory. We created many chances and it was a high quality match for us. We used our marking system in the second half, we did get tired but we stayed calm.”
