Creating the possibilities to harmonize relationships between players, whose personal life is different than others, and soccer’s mentors, Robbie Rogers, the player who openly accepted to be a gay player, has now joined Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer. Earlier, he had to retire from international soccer after admitting his sexual preferences through a blog post back in February, but after getting an immense support from family, friends, and fans, he decided to return back and face the critics in favor of soccer as a sport. Actually, sexuality has ever been linked with many sports, especially soccer, where we have seen how some players were targeted on doubting to be unnatural as far their sexual preferences are concerned. It happened with woman soccer players as well whenever any woman player admitted to have an unusual private life. Rogers is now the first MLS player who has officially labeled himself as gay, he told about his deal with Galaxy as, “I don’t know what I was so afraid of. It’s been such a positive experience for me. The one thing I’ve learned from all of this is being gay is not that big of a deal to people. People are just really growing and accepting and loving. Those other things are just not that important to them. I think as the younger get older and the generations come and go, I think times are just becoming more accepting.”
The deal between Galaxy and Rogers would probably be announced on Saturday though the player has already been training with the club since last few weeks. When asked about why he broke his retirement, he said, he could not leave playing soccer hence he has to change his mind and came back again on the field. Many believe that he would not be able to play for Galaxy right away coz of his absence from the field for long, perhaps he can better train himself during next couple of months. Galaxy general manager Bruce Arena said about his fitness that “Certainly the league, and I think the fans, are going to be receptive in a real positive way. But we’re not in this to pioneer social issues. We’re trying to win games as a team, and we’re trying to produce the best team we can. Robbie has shown us that he has the potential to still be a real good player in our league, and that’s what we’re hopeful of.”
So, welcome a positive change in the mentality and hopefully it will spread across the world and we’ll see players contributing their hundred percent on the field without being affected by who thinks what about them.
