Since American soccer player and Tottenham Hotspur’s goalkeeper: Brad Friedel has crossed his 41 years of age; he is apparently thinking of his retirement. If rumors are to be believed, this premier league session will be the last for him. Notably, the star goalkeeper has played record 310 league matches consecutively without any break in his eight years career for the club. His first match for Tottenham was played on August 14, 2004, and during his long spell, there was only one halt when Hugo Lloris was chosen as his replacement in a Spurs fixture match against Aston Villa, and this halt disappointed him deeply especially by Hugo Lloris, who is considered to be his rival. Though, neither he nor Hugo Lloris has ever accepted anything about their rivalry, perhaps in public, they both take it as a healthy competition among them.
Friedel has had a record consistence spell in Premium league; possibly, he is among few who have played so many matches without a break. Before joining Tottenham, he has played for many other clubs including Liverpool, Aston Villa, and Blackburn. Since he is crossing an age barrier for a soccer player, current premier league session could be his last spell on the field though he has kept all options open. Even he has planned his post retirement career either by becoming a coach or a soccer media personal for rest of his life. He quoted to Mirror and said, “I’m definitely looking at all the possibilities for next season.”
Since his contract with Tottenham is scheduled to be expiring after this season, it is very much unlikely that he will get a contract renewal especially by overtaking his rival Hugo Lloris. Moreover, his age doesn’t not support his continue spell as well. On the other hand, 25 year old Hugo Lloris has already shown his disappoint by calling him number 2 goalkeeper; hence he is most likely to be the next goalkeeper for the club if Friedel retires. Especially, his price tag of £12 million does not allow Tottenham to put him on the back seat either.
Anyways, no matter if he retires from the game, but the important point is he served the club for a long period of time with some unforgettable performances, which would be very difficult for other goalies to suppress. He also gave his views about his country mate: Clint Dempsey and said, “Tottenham’s a big club, and the fans expect to play in a certain way, a very attack-minded way. Clint with his ability to score goals will fit into it really well.”
