When you are above thirty, it is always skeptical whether your side will offer you an extension or not no matter who you are or how important you have been for your side, and it specifically holds true for English sides who are infamous for their fire and hire policies. Liverpool’s 34-year-old captain Steven Gerrard is one such player, who has been an integral part of the Reds army back since 1998, and whose career in Anfield looked to be in doubt when he himself said he is looking at other options in spite of the rumors that Reds are ready to renew his contract which is going to expire next June. However, no official statement has been made from the blub bosses, but few close sources have revealed that acclaimed midfielder may not be interested in staying with one of the most successful English clubs. Nonetheless whatever is happening in the backyard, his colleagues Jordan Henderson and Rickie Lambert have appealed their mentor to sign the extension being offered by the bosses as they can’t even imagine a side without him. On the other hand, skipper has hinted that if he accepts the offer, he would like to concentrate over his game rather being overburdened with any extra load which means he can opt for the extension minus captainship.
Henderson, who admires his captain the most, said in his interview recently, “Every single member of the squad hope he stays for many years to come. Steven knows his own mind and what he wants to do. It is down to him, the club and his representatives to sort it out.
“He is huge for us and we need to keep him for as long as we can. Liverpool without Steven Gerrard is unimaginable. Nobody wants to lose him — I’m sure the club feel that way as well.”
Similarly, 32-year-old forward Lambert, who joined the side last June and has been a die-hard fan of Gerrard also added, “I think I am speaking for everyone involved in Liverpool that we are desperate to keep Stevie. It’s clear that it’s his decision and the club’s decision but I think he needs to stay at Liverpool for the rest of his life — that’s just my opinion. Stevie is his own man but he is Mr Liverpool so it’s up to the club to sort out, nothing to do with me.”
