Dreams of English fans were shattered when Costa Rica defeated Italy in the Group D match confirming first English exit in the group stage itself since 1958. This is the first high profile departure from the Brazil – just after playing two games actually! Roy Hodgson, the manager of Three Lions, who has been an optimistic mentor before FIFA event began, is not ready to accept that his team could not even enter into the next stage; perhaps, he does not think his side deserves to be ousted from the event so easily. Now, reactions have started coming from every corner: while almost all are unhappy with the way England performed in first two games, there are few who are openly accusing manager’s highly overconfident approach for the biggest soccer event. There had initially been several media statements passed by the English manager saying they are in a better position to enter into the finals that put lots of pressures on players’ shoulders and result is in front of all of us. Despite all this, 66-year-old English manager refuses to accept there is any foul in the way they approached into the event, however, it was their bad luck they could not restrict Suarez to score the winner in the last game and rest is done by the Cost Rica who contributed into their exit – indirectly.
Talking about their short lived Brazilian campaign, Hodgson said, “Results colour everything. We’ve worked so hard, done so much preparation for this tournament. We think we came here well-prepared but we’ve failed.
“We obviously had really big hopes we were going to make the nation proud by going far in the tournament and we haven’t done that so any words on any other subjects are pretty empty at the moment.
“To make an impact you’ve got to win games and we’ve lost both our games. I’m proud of the way they’ve approached it and everything they put into it. I’m just devastated they got nothing out of it. I’m very low and so are the players.”
Actually, English team has never been a threat for any big side in the world cup, it is English media who used to upraise their caliber every time a global soccer event starts and this is exactly what happened this time as well. After the dismissal performance in Brazil, English FA chairman has hinted they could rethink about the top post for upcoming Euro championship later this year and if Hodgson is shown the doors, it would be second high profile exit from England after Alex who resigned voluntarily few months back.
