Madrid lost Copa del Rey final to Atletico Madrid

May 18, 2013 by 888Scoreonline

Real Madrid 1 – 2 Atletico Madrid

In an action pack Copa del Rey final Real Madrid lost by 2-1 to Atletico Madrid despite taking the lead at one stage. Starlet Ronaldo put Real on top when he capitalized Mesut Ozil’s corner through his header, but Diego Costa did not waste any time in leveling this initial lead. It was rather a bad defense to allow them to equalize so early otherwise Real’s lead could have been there for a longer time. The match was so tight till the end that no team could score another goal in the first ninety minutes thereafter hence match has to be extended to extra time where, in 98th minute, Joao Miranda’s header on Koke’s cross secured a legendary victory for Atletico. It was more a worst news for Real manager Mourinho which has already hinted to leave the club after this season. In fact, this is the first season in his stay at Madrid that he ended without having any silverware. During his stay, he won three titles: a La Liga title in 2011-12, a Copa del Rey in 2010-11, and one Spanish Super Cup 2012. In fact, Mourinho also protested for a Referee’s decision about awarding a free-kick to Atletico and Ronaldo also joined him to show his anger over official’s decision. Overall, despite performing well at La Liga and the Champions League, Mourinho could not sustain any success there and now he lost Copa del Rey final.

The victory is even more important for Atletico looking at their drought for a long 14 years, after all their performance was aggressive until the end and that is why they quashed several Real attempts to equalize their hard earned lead. On the other hand, Real’s starlet Ronaldo has now scored 55 goals in this season, and in total, he has scored 201 goals playing for Real Madrid.

Later, Mourinho marked this season as the worst of his life, he said, “I have a contract that is valid for three more years. I still haven’t talked to the president about my future. This year’s campaign was a failure but my first two seasons were successful.”

He further added, “This was the worst season of my career. I don’t think Atletico deserve to be champions but they won the title. We had two clear chances on goal, we hit the post three times… that is why I think it was unfair. Atletico’s keeper was fantastic but he was also very lucky.”
