Soccer is the game of numbers where each team tries to win by scoring more goals than its opponent; this is what matters for teams playing on the ground, for outsiders, especially electronic broadcasters, there is something else that matters the most and that is how many viewers watch the live telecast which eventually is converted into mounting revenues for these broadcasters. Actually, television broadcasting is the most important factor in deciding whether a match was popular or not and that is why we see mounting TRPs of many big league games; perhaps more than a popular international tie up between to arch rivals. Last week’s Champions leagues clash between Manchester United and Real Madrid created a buzz across millions of their fans, and finally when DDay arrived, it was like a festive season for all: teams, fans, and especially official TV broadcaster Fox who live telecasted the match. A recent Nielsen Media Research shows that last Championship League match between the two was the highest watched weekly telecast in network’s history taking every kind of show into account.
Real Madrid defeated United by 2-1 on its turf and that defeat was witnessed by more than 520000 viewers which is the third highest TRP for any soccer event after 2011 Gold Cup final and match just before that between Chelsea and Liverpool. These figures are gathered by a week-long survey by the Gus Johnson and Warren Barton and it excluded all the live viewers who were presented in the stadium and watching the live game. Fox generated revenue of millions of dollars by accurately deciding the advertising rates at correct time.
In every sport, live TV stream plays a vital role for its sponsors who eventually get more revenues by selling advertisement slots during various high profile matches’ live telecast, but it was the first time Fox network could achieve a milestone in network’s history by recording higher number of live viewers. The high profile match proved to be a setback for United while its boss Alex Ferguson’s decision to leave Rooney from the match was also being criticized by many, including his own advisers in the team. Anyways, for now, United has been ousted by Madrid in a stunning match where the best team won. There are going to be more problems for United like how it would manage to let its main player Rooney go off if they receive their asking price. Let’s see.
