Nothing can relieved you more than winning against your arch rivals and that too if you rival has been in a good form and you were not. This is something that seems to be happening with Manchester United and its boss Jose Mourinho who made a striking comeback in the season by crushing Manchester City by 1-0 at home. It was rather a nail biting finish but since it yielded result for a highly demotivated side like ManU, it is a crushing victory. It has been just few days passed by when this stars studded side failed to overcome Chelsea and lost the game by a big 4-0 margin and now when they defeated Manchester City and cleared the road to play in the Football League Cup quarterfinal, it is like dream comes true and this is what manager believes and Juan Mata is his hero who netted the only goal of the game and sealed a home quarterfinal against West Ham United. While it is obviously a much needed win for the Red Devils, Mourinho says players fought for their fans and answered their critics who were severely lambasting their form in last couple of weeks.
Talking about the game and how his boys played, Mourinho said in an interview to the BBC Sport, “The players did everything and deserved to win. We are happy. In the last week, everything went against us but we are professionals. The fans felt deeply such a negative result and today was a good chance to clear that feeling because a derby knockout and to win gives everyone a better feeling.”
Again reacting over the questions that if Chelsea defeat made them furious and they played only to recoup that loss, Mourinho replied, “Yes. We were on a good run of results, but it was a big defeat — numbers that the history of this club doesn’t deserve and, when I’m in a club, my heart belongs to the fans and I felt deeply for them. The reality is that I never had people like these ones. We lost 4-0 and they were supportive. Today the stadium was full of real support and it looks like the love people have for the club is bigger than bad results, bigger than three bad seasons.
“We must give something back. The players gave everything but, even if we’d lost, the feeling was fantastic because the players showed they really care and they fought for the fans.”
