The 46-year-old former professional footballer and ex-Bolton Wanderers Manager Owen Coyle has now joined the EPL club Wigan on a twelve months rolling contract. The news is confirmed by none other than Wigan chairman Dave Whelan who told this to BBC sport that such a deal has taken place. Coyle has been a known figure in soccer fraternity with many ups and downs in his career. Earlier, he has been Bolton manager from 2010 to 2012 but sacked from there after The Wanderers failed to save the relegation. Wigan’s former manager Roberto Martinez was also forced to leave the club after he could not deliver in the Premier League; hence it would be the same world again for the new manager coz here too he would be facing a firing weapon if he ever makes a mistake. Notably, Martinez performance with Wigan has been decent where he managed to won FA cup but failed to deliver in the Championship therefore he was forced to make a shift to Everton on a four-year contract. On his departure, Wigan said, “Roberto’s influence at the club, both as a player and manager, an association that spanned over a decade, will remain unforgettable to all Latics’ fans. The club would like to place on record its appreciation for his tireless work during that time, culminating in FA Cup glory last month at Wembley Stadium.”
Coyle birth at DW Stadium was explained by chairman in a detailed interview to a sport channel where he talked about the surroundings that compelled him to fire Martinez and sign a rolling contract with Coyle, he said, “I have agreed a deal in principle with Owen and his agent is now with our chief executive to finalise the deal. But as far as I’m concerned, we have sorted it and I hope the rest will be sorted in the next hour. I’ve told him returning to the Premier League is the total and utter priority. It’s fantastic that we are in Europe but that comes second and he knows that the Premier League is where we have to be.
“It’s been no easy task but Owen has shown enthusiasm and passion from the moment I met him. He’s been there and done it with Burnley. He wasn’t so successful at Bolton but he had a lot of injuries and bad luck. People forget that. You need luck on times but he’s certainly got the passion, energy and enthusiasm I was looking for.”
Coyle was not the first choice to take the vacancy at Wigan as former England manager Steve McClaren was the favorite to sign the deal but on chairman’s reference Coyle got the job. Let us see how he keeps his contract rolling while serving at a highly demanding position.
