Saudi Arabia has possibly caused the biggest upset at the 2022 FIFA World Cup by defeating heavyweights Argentina on Nov 22. Argentina were expected to have an easy opening game against minnows Saudi Arabia but received a massive shock after the Saudi’s surprised them with their aggressive brand of football and went on to win 2-1.
Argentina started right and were quickly 1-0 after 10 minutes after Lionel Messi converted a penalty. It looked like Argentina were going to run away with the game in the first half as they seemed to find the back of the net with ease only to have those goals over turned due to the off-side rule. Argentina scored thrice but all three goals were disallowed.
Saudi Arabia came back strong in the second half to score back to back goals which eventually help them seal the game 2-1.
Saudi King Declares National Holiday
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman decided to celebrate this massive upset by announcing that Nov 23 will be a public holiday in Saudi Arabia for everyone to celebrate. Hervé Renard, head coach for Saudi Arabia said that this was a memorable for his team who will play Poland next on Nov 26.
