It was a dream day for Wolves in the League One cup where they enhanced their own record to nine successive wins in the event and guess what who helped them sustain this feat, it was Bakary Sako who triggered the two goals in the first half itself and created a havoc in the stadium. First goal was a perfect header from Malian international when he capitalized James Henry’s pass brilliantly and then he helped Nouha Dicko enhance their lead in the nineteenth minute. Saka again got an opportunity and got a flawless goal to add into his tally. By the half time, they were leading the board by 3-0, or in other words, they had already become the winner by then. Though, Smith put some resistance by scoring a goal in the seventy fourth minute, but it was too late by then to expect anything. Apart from the scorecard, Wolves dominated the field for full ninety minutes; there was not even a single moment when they looked to be losing the touch while Swindon kept fighting until the end. It was clearly a lack of planning on their part to curb a strong opponent.
Manager Mark Cooper accepted that in a post-match press brief where he said, “You can’t play against a club like Wolves, with the financial riches they’ve got, and not have 11 men pulling in the same direction. After rolling their sleeves up, I thought they were outstanding in the second half. I understand it’s easier when you’re 3-0 down but we could have easily been blown away. Full credit to the boys on the pitch in the second half – I thought they were outstanding.”
While on the other side, Wolves manager Kenny Jackett seemed to be both happy and little disappointed with the way they played in the second half, in fact, they could have gained more goals if they capitalized every available opportunity – this is what he felt and said, “It was a game of two halves. I thought we were very poor in the second half and rode our luck. I was disappointed in the second half. We’re capable of doing better and we’ll have to do more than that. The most important thing is that we’ve won and it’s a fantastic achievement by the players to get the club record.”
With this emphatic victory, Kenny Jackett side is leading the table with two points clear lead from Leyton Orient who has played thirty six games than thirty four of Wolves.
